I.In brief

Simone Book Services is a curatorial practice for reading culture, founded in Copenhagen in February 2026 by Tugce Kayar Subay and Ibo Subay. The idea is to speculate on the many facets of the book: as the subject of the reading practice, as a cultural signifier and as a design object. It works in three directions.

Books and printed matterDirection 1

The first is curation of books and printed matter. More than a thousand titles share one floor with no sections: rare and out-of-print books on art, design, architecture, photography, fashion and culture, starting with the founders’ own collection; limited runs from independent publishers; and around eighty current magazines beside vintage issues.

Book ServicesDirection 2

The second is book services for brands, a practice the founders call literary branding. Simone curates and builds libraries for brand locations, offices and exhibitions, and uses books and printed matter in campaigns, events and spaces, adding a layer of visual and symbolic depth to a brand’s communication.

Reading DesignDirection 3

The third is Reading Design: a rethink of how, what and where we read, and of how books are displayed. Books reach beyond their content to become a form of personal expression, and in an attention economy reading is a deliberate choice, time taken for oneself, a way of being. Reading Design gives that choice its objects, commissioned from Copenhagen designers.

II.The founders

Tugce Kayar Subay and Ibo Subay

Tugce Kayar Subay and Ibo Subay founded Simone Book Services in Copenhagen in February 2026, after years in fashion media and marketing.

Three Simones

The name honours three women the founders call personal heroes, three women who lived what they wrote and sang: Nina Simone, Simone de Beauvoir and, more recently, Simone Weil. French literature is the ground the couple share, from school onward. Tugce Kayar Subay is executive editor of Numéro Istanbul and has worked for Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel and Marie Claire. Ibo Subay comes from marketing and media, and has worked with international brands across sports, technology and culture.

III.Books and printed matter

Direction 1

Rare and out-of-print books on art, design, architecture, photography, fashion and culture, limited runs from independent publishers and around eighty current magazines, starting with the founders’ own collection.

From the shelvesBook scans, Simone Book Services

A floor without categories

More than a thousand titles fill 114 square metres, and many of the titles and publishers had never been stocked in Denmark before. Two questions decide what comes in: will the book still matter in a fast-moving time, and will it still be a pleasure to own years from now? What stays out is the generic, however well designed, and anything that carries the fatigue of the feed.

“A selection is a set of positions. We want a room full of them to produce encounters nobody planned.”

Tugce Kayar Subay

A private library, released in parts

For twenty years the books were bought for the founders’ own shelves. Over time ordinary copies gave way to editions better in content, production and rarity, and the collection widened into new fields. Since July 2026 it has been released in parts, beside finds from auctions, dealers and private libraries: artists’ books, exhibition catalogues, photobooks and monographs.

Eighty magazines

The magazine wall at the storefront carries around eighty current titles, among them Erotic Review, L’Etiquette, Viscose, Alphabet, See All This, Arxipelag, Conforma, Scenery, Interview, Real Review and MacGuffin, with vintage issues beside them. The list is meant to change: the founders are wary of what success does to a magazine, when the reasons for its success harden into a formula. Simone follows Danish publishers closely, among them Bureau for Listening, At Last Books, Plethora and the Danish Architectural Press.

Direction 2 · Three clients

Books and printed matter in a brand’s communication: libraries for its spaces, books in its campaigns and styling for its images.

Literary branding

The founders call it literary branding: a brand read back to itself through the books it would keep. A person’s shelves tell you about their taste, their depth and the questions they are still living with, and a brand’s should too. Each commission starts from what a brand says, thinks and does, what it reads and where it goes to be moved, then how it looks, talks and sounds.

V.Reading Design

Direction 3 · Six designers

The interior is the first chapter of Reading Design, the third direction of the practice. Simone asks Copenhagen designers for the objects of an ideal reading setting: displays, bookmarks, bookends, magazine holders, lighting, shelves, page weights. The question behind it is how we read, turn pages and keep our books, at a time when owning things means less every day. A first edition is in preparation for later this year.

Inspired by couture

The interior concept by Derya Arpaç borrows from couture. The founders’ brief put the visitor and the reading experience at the centre and asked for a modular space; the room is fitted like a dress, and every display element is by a different designer, made for Simone and built in Copenhagen by local cabinetmakers and upholsterers. The designers were chosen to be unlike one another, on the principle that opposites attract.

Materials

Four materials carry the room, set on the building’s original terrazzo floor. Leather from Sørensen Leather, the Danish leather house, covers Lærke Ryom’s counter, cut loose like an oversized coat, in shifting tones that follow the terrazzo, with zippers hiding storage beneath. Cherry wood, first recommended by carpenter Jonas Lyndby Jensen, forms Derya Arpaç’s floor-to-ceiling shelving; it brings warmth now and will darken with age and use. Raw aluminium sheet, held by exposed black screws and bolts, makes Kasper Kyster’s magazine displays. Black Valchromat, oiled with Osmo and the plainest material in the room, is used for Daniel Schofield’s Reading Bench and Book Stand. Staffan Sundström’s three paintings hang on the walls, and the Red Room adds the brand’s red.

Shelving

Derya Arpaç

Derya Arpaç is a Copenhagen-based architect and furniture designer with a Master of Arts in Architecture and Design from the Royal Danish Academy. She works by intuition and moves freely between architecture and furniture, treating a room and an object as one problem of proportion, material and atmosphere. She aims for designs that are clear, calm and made to last.

The floor-to-ceiling cherry wood shelving runs along the room like a long horizon line. Cherry wood was a favourite in Danish homes for decades before it went out of fashion; carpenter Jonas Lyndby Jensen first recommended it here. It brings warmth and weight to the room, and a sense of time. The wood will darken with age and show where it has been used, and the shelving stays in the background, giving the room the calm of a private library.

Counter

Lærke Ryom

Lærke Ryom (b. 1995) is a Danish furniture designer based in Copenhagen, where she graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in 2022. She works between furniture and clothing, bringing the details and techniques of tailoring into furniture.

The 3.6-metre counter wears a leather cover cut deliberately oversized. Slightly offset seams soften its strict form into gentle curves and give books and magazines a soft surface to rest on. The counter is mobile, yet its size makes it the calm centre of the room, and the leather dampens the acoustics. The shifting tones of the leather follow the colours of the original terrazzo floor. Hidden zippers open onto storage under the upholstery.

Displays

Kasper Kyster

Kasper Kyster is a Copenhagen-based furniture designer whose practice combines material research, industrial production and craftsmanship. He works across furniture, objects and spatial installations, developing each project by hand and by experiment, and often uses everyday materials and manufacturing processes in unexpected ways. He is interested in how things are built and in what ordinary materials can do, and his pieces are clear in structure and strongly tactile. He works both independently and in collaboration.

The display is made from raw aluminium sheet, assembled with exposed black screws and bolts. Its built-in shelves set magazines and books in a steady rhythm, so the publications become part of the structure. The modular system scales from a narrow freestanding unit to a full wall. The material is industrial and the detailing precise and restrained, so the eye goes to the publications.

Bench and stand

Daniel Schofield

Daniel Schofield is a British furniture and product designer based in Copenhagen, with a background in graphic design and carpentry. He studied furniture and product design at Sheffield Hallam University, was mentored early by Terence Conran, and founded his studio in 2012. He has designed for Audo Copenhagen, NaughtOne, Ercol, SCP and Benchmark, and his work has received the Wood Awards, the Design Guild Mark and the Elle Decoration British Design Award. He looks for simplicity and use: objects meant to be valued and kept for a long time.

The Reading Bench and the Book Stand are made in black Valchromat, a plain material chosen to sit beside the leather and the cherry wood, so both feel simple and architectural. The bench is where visitors sit down to read.

He was art director of Kinfolk magazine and of the Swedish design studio Note, and has made images and editorial productions for Scandinavian publications, design houses, museums and restaurants, among them Fritz Hansen and Iittala.

He painted three works for Simone’s walls, Metamorphosis among them, and photographed the space.
